RTS award for Jock Stein film
We are celebrating! We won a prestigious RTS gong at the Royal Television Society awards for the best programmes produced in Scotland in 2014!
Produced for BBC ALBA by purpleTV, Jock Stein charts the rise of the player then manager from the coalmines of Lanarkshire to the pinnacle of European football and beyond.
The 60 minute entertainment documentary - produced and directed by Margot McCuaig and presented by Alex O’Henley - was shortlisted alongside Sore in the Saddle, Adventure Show Special (BBC Two Scotland) and Tonight At The Games (BBC One).
Jock Stein is one of a number of sports documentaries produced by purpleTV for BBC ALBA. Past documentaries include Honeyballers, charting the history of women’s football in Scotland; Gothenburg ’83, looking at the European Cup Winners’ Cup triumph of Aberdeen in the early 1980s and Tartan Pride, a film about the historical, emotional and cultural impact of the Scotland v England football fixture.
Currently in production for BBC ALBA by purpleTV is Jim Baxter, a look at the magic on the pitch and the personal life away from the game of the Scotland and Rangers legend.
Margot McCuaig, from producers purpleTV, said: “It is hugely pleasing to win the award after the hard-work of so many on the production team to bring Jock Stein’s story together. We owe a huge credit to the contributors to the programme who helped us bring Jock’s extraordinary tale to the screen.
“BBC ALBA, and Alan Esslemont who commissioned the programme, also deserve huge credit for their commitment to telling exceptional Scottish stories. We’re delighted that Jock Stein was enjoyed by the channel’s audience and we hope our future productions can replicate this success.”
MG ALBA funded the production of Jock Stein for BBC ALBA.
Alan Esslemont, head of content at MG ALBA, said: “Jock Stein is an exceptional and poignant look at the Scottish football legend and we are thrilled to see it claim a prestigious Royal Television Society Scotland award despite fierce competition from other excellent programmes.
“Our congratulations go to the producers purpleTV. The sport documentaries produced for the channel have been very popular across a wide spectrum of BBC ALBA viewers and it is wonderful that there is now industry recognition to sit alongside the acclaim of the BBC ALBA audience.”
